Synthetic Biology

This Technology Explainer will explore the growing field of synthetic biology. Although other fields of science may fall under the umbrella of synthetic biology, the scope of this piece will be limited to the generally accepted view that synthetic biology is a branch of bioengineering dedicated to the creation of artificial, unnatural, or synthetic forms of life via gene-editing techniques.1 The discussion begins with an analysis of the underlying principles of synthetic biology. It then describes the innovative examples, standardization efforts, and common criticisms of this controversial science.
