Brains in a Dish: Organoid Intelligence and the Future of Computing
As traditional AI faces growing concerns over energy consumption and environmental sustainability, the developing field organoid intelligence (OI) has the potential to be a more energy-efficient alternative to today’s machine-learning models. Simultaneously, OI raises complex ethical and legal questions about the integration of human brain tissue with computer technology. This Technology Explainer discusses the science behind cerebral organoids, introduces the concept of organoid intelligence, and briefly reviews some of the legal and ethical implications of the field.
